Clear Retainers That Keep Your Teeth Straight and Your Smile Bright
Image
I needed a replacement retainer. I've been wearing retainers for a long time, and just expected someone to hand them to me. Instead, the dentist spent a lot of time talking to me and working with the retainers to be sure they fit perfectly. Thank you!

Why Do I Need a Retainer?

Retainers are vital for keeping your smile aligned and secure. After braces or clear aligners have shifted your teeth into their perfect spots, the surrounding gums, ligaments, and bone require some time—usually 6 to 12 months—to strengthen and adjust. Until everything is fully settled, your teeth are more likely to shift.

Wearing your retainer regularly is the key to keeping the results you’ve worked so hard for. Everyday activities like chewing, clenching, or grinding can put pressure on your teeth, causing them to shift over time. Even as an adult, your teeth are still on the move throughout your life.

Your retainer is like a protective shield, stopping any unwanted changes and safeguarding your smile investment. The more consistently you wear it, the longer your teeth will stay perfectly aligned.

Only Vivera retainers are included in this program, giving you multiple sets at a discounted price so you’re covered if retainers are lost or worn out.

Other Retention Options We Offer

In addition to Vivera retainers, our office also provides other retention appliances depending on your orthodontic needs:

  • Hawley Retainers: Traditional removable retainers with a wire and acrylic base.
  • Bonded (Fixed) Retainers: A permanent wire affixed behind your teeth for continuous retention.
  • Night Guards: Customized guards to protect your teeth from grinding/clenching.

Our orthodontist will recommend the best retention solution for you based on your treatment results and long-term goals.

What Exactly Is a Retainer?

A retainer is a custom-made, clear appliance that fits snugly over your teeth. We start by taking an impression of your smile after treatment, then craft the retainer to match that shape perfectly. After that, we smooth and adjust it so it feels comfortable in your mouth. You’ll try it on, tell us how it feels, and we’ll make any tweaks needed until it fits just right.

Do I Really Have to Wear It?

Yes—wearing it consistently really matters. Most people keep their retainer in full-time for 12–18 months, only taking it out to eat, brush, or play sports. This helps your teeth settle into their new positions. After that period, you’ll transition to wearing it just at night. Skipping days can allow teeth to shift, and long gaps might make the retainer stop fitting properly—sometimes meaning braces or aligners are needed again.

How to Care for Your Retainer

Taking good care of your retainer helps it last for years—and keeps your smile right where you want it. Here’s how to make sure it stays clean and working its best:

  • Take it out before eating. Food can get stuck on it, create odors, and even damage the material, so it’s safest to remove it during meals.
  • Keep it clean every day. Gently brush your retainer with a soft toothbrush and a little toothpaste to keep it fresh. Once you switch to only wearing it at night, you can also give it a deeper clean now and then with baking soda or a denture-cleaning solution.

Wear and care go hand in hand. With consistent use and a simple cleaning routine, your retainer will help keep your smile beautifully aligned for years to come.
